Mount St. Charles Tennis | Mounties edge Classical, head to Div. II finals

LINCOLN – Mount St. Charles officially earned the right to once again defend its team title after holding on for a 4-3 win over Classical on Thursday at Lincoln High School. The Mounties, who have captured the past two Division II titles and are the No. 2 season this year, will face undefeated and top see Wheeler Saturday at Slater Park.

PAWTUCKET – In a back-and-forth affair, Tolman outlasted Lincoln, 6-5, on Thursday at Slater Park’s Al Bailey Field.

The Tigers, who are in the midst of stretch of four games in four days, broke a 5-5 tie in the bottom of the sixth behind a two-out double by senior Leiandra Wilson. The Lions, who held leads of 2-0 and 4-1, didn’t threaten in the seventh.

WOONSOCKET – Mount St. Charles advanced to the semifinal round of the Division II playoffs with a solid 4-2 win over Cranston West on their home courts on Wednesday.

Number-two seeded Mount will face off against number-three seed Classical at the Lincoln High School courts on Thursday in the semifinal matchup.

The Mounties once again relied on Mike Doody at No. 1 singles to set the tone. Doody dispatched his foe Jake Meyerson, 6-0, 6-4.

NORTH SMITHFIELD  –  North Smithfield High hadn’t played up to expectations for the better part of this Division II-North campaign, so veteran head coach Paul Mercier held a 30-minute team meeting after Tuesday afternoon’s practice.

He felt his Northmen were better than their 6-6 league record, and weren’t getting along as well as they could be.
