GOLDEN OPPORTUNITY: Mike Roncarati’s love of physical training took him to top of the sports world

July 7, 2015

In his capacity as strength and conditioning coach for the Golden State Warriors, Mike Roncarati was privy to one of the best seats in the area to watch the best NBA team in 2014-15.

For roughly 2.5 hours each game night, the 27-year-old Roncarati considered himself no different than a paying customer. There’s just one major difference: They aren’t taking a seat behind the Golden State bench and next to the assistant coaches who are responsible for tracking plays.

Little League Baseball | Lincoln has no trouble with Cumberland American in District IV opener

July 7, 2015

LINCOLN – Charlie Hien has been around Little League baseball long enough to know better.

The Lincoln All-Star manager knows that one game does not determine a season; one game does not punch your ticket to the state tournament (or beyond).

While he was impressed with his team’s performance in its District IV Major Division opener against Cumberland American on Monday night – a five-inning, 14-1 mercy-rule rout at Hien Field – he’s prepared for a tough journey ahead, knowing full well there are several squads capable of doing some damage this all-star season.

July 6, 2015

CUMBERLAND – There are no scheduled royalty payments, nor is Dave Belisle being gifted with a lifetime supply of cereal in the wake of a new Kellogg’s Frosted Flakes commercial that includes excerpts from his famous speech at last year’s Little League World Series.

Road Racing | Master of the Mills: Jack Thornhill runs his 44th consecutive Arnold Mills Race

July 5, 2015

CUMBERLAND – Tom Kenwood has spent decades helping in the organization of the annual Arnold Mills Four-Mile Road Race, held every Fourth of July morning since 1969, and can’t believe that Jack Thornhill has remained such a constant.

“The guy’s amazing,” Kenwood remarked of the seemingly-ageless septuagenarian.

At the tender age of 73, Thornhill completed his 44th consecutive Mills event on Saturday, finishing in 44 minutes, 35 seconds, good for third overall in the Senior Veteran Division.
