Northmen advance to Division III tennis finals

May 22, 2013

LINCOLN — Will the fifth time be the charm for North Smithfield?
After coming up short in the program’s quest for its first Division III championship from 2004-06 and last season, the Northmen have earned another crack at grabbing that elusive title.
In a semifinal-round match that took just 55 minutes to complete and offered zero drama to the small scattering of fans on hand, the undefeated Northmen cruised to a 4-0 triumph over Exeter/West Greenwich at Lincoln High’s courts.

Wright doesn’t want to knuckle under troubles

May 21, 2013

PAWTUCKET – Concrete evidence as to why Steven Wright is experiencing a downturn on the mound recently was on full display in the first inning of his latest start on Monday.
Dealing with a bases-loaded mess that came about due to a walk and two singles, Wright looked in at Indianapolis’ Jerry Sands, owner of a .168 batting average. As has been the case lately, Wright quickly fell behind, this time 2-0 to Sands.

Iglesias plays third in PawSox's win over Tribe

May 21, 2013

PAWTUCKET – Pawtucket’s new third baseman came out feeling pretty good about his showing at the hot corner on Tuesday afternoon.
“It was fun to see the game from a different angle,” smiled Jose Iglesias after the PawSox came out on top in a wild 9-8 affair against Indianapolis. “I’ve never played third base in my life and it wasn’t bad.”
Iglesias was making his professional debut at third after logging 313 games at shortstop between the majors and minors. His first chance came in the third inning where Iglesias one-hopped a throw to first baseman Drew Sutton. He was charged with an error.

May 21, 2013

LINCOLN — Back on April 30, Mount St. Charles Academy head coach Sean McClelland had to face crosstown rival Woonsocket without three of his top four singles players, including senior tri-captain Jack Ricci, sophomore Mike Doody and junior Travis Connolly.
The first two were out due to illness and a back injury, respectively, while Connolly missed it for what McClelland termed “a disciplinary reason.”
