Woonsocket Track & Field | Villa Novans get ready to throw their weight around

When it comes to the weight events in high school track and field, particularly the hammer and indoor weight, Rhode Island has been one of the country’s best. At the national meet this past winter season, the Ocean State claimed the first three slots in the 25-pound weight and two of the top six in the girls’ 20-pounder. It was even better at the outdoor nationals where R.I. nearly swept the boys’ competition in the hammer, taking five of the six podium spots, and earned three medals for girls.

College Football | Former Burrillville QB DeSilva opts to not play at URI this season

BURRILLVILLE – Deb Hunt would listen to her grandson Isaiah DeSilva whenever he talked about balancing a heavy summer course load and his college football responsibilities.

Hunt interpreted what DeSilva expressed as nothing more than the desire of an incoming freshman who was fully intent on honoring his agreed-upon student-athlete duties. Never once did anyone close to DeSilva believe that the football portion of the equation was seriously hanging in the balance.

LINCOLN — Two of Rhode Island’s beloved school sports coaches will be the center of attention, as the Blackstone Valley Tourism Council (BVTC), celebrates another milestone, with its 30th Annual Awards Dinner & Ceremonies. This special event is set for Thursday, October 1 at Twin River Casino Event Center, 100 Twin River Road.

LINCOLN — Signed by the Garden State Grays just two weeks ago, RHP John Tangherlini, a native Rhode Islander and Lincoln High School graduate, is making some big impressions in the big-league environment that is the Canadian American Association of Professional Baseball, an independent league with teams in the northeastern United States and Canada.
