Call mayoral debate tonight

October 3, 2013

WOONSOCKET — The Call’s mayoral debate will take place tonight from 7 to 9 p.m. at City Hall. Mayor Leo Fontaine, candidate Lisa Baldelli-Hunt and Dave Fisher will take questions from a panel of reporters and broadcasters. A Mount St. Charles Academy senior will also join the panel with questions for the candidates.

“I’m looking forward to the debate and I’m hoping for a lively and revealing exchange between the panel that includes WOON, WNRI, Call reporters and the candidates,” Bianca Pavoncello, executive editor of The Call, said. “I’m also excited that a Mount St. Charles senior will be joining us as well. It will be good to have a fresh, young voice at the debate.”

The debate format will allow for a three-minute opening statement from each candidate followed by questions and answers. Candidates will have two minutes to respond to each question. Candidates will also give a brief closing statement. The debate will be carried live on Cox Channel 17 and will be aired on WOON and WNRI. The debate will be rebroadcast on Monday on Channel 17.

In the event Harris Hall becomes too crowded, an overflow room will be available in City Hall.

Tonight’s debate is just the latest in one of the most debate-filled campaign cycles in the city in years. In addition to a series of radio debates sponsored by radio station WNRI, the Black Initiatives Group (BIG) is sponsoring individual debates for City Council and mayoral races after the primary.

The contenders for council will debate on Oct. 10, those for mayor, on Oct. 18. Both events will take place at 7 p.m. at St. James Baptist Church, 340 South Main St.

BIG encourages questions from the community. They can be forwarded by email at blackinitiativesgroup@gmail.com.

The primary is Tuesday.
