WOONSOCKET – Somehow, a toddler managed to fall out of a second-story window Saturday without getting hurt, police say.
The 2-year-old boy and his father, Isaiah Ethier, 27, were visiting friends at 291 Bernon St. when the accident happened at about 11 a.m., according to Detective Jamie Paone.
The child got close to the window by climbing onto a nearby countertop and then pushed on the screen, said Paone. The screen was still in place when the police arrived, but there was a large tear in it, she said.
Ethier ran outside and found the boy lying on the ground, but he wasn’t down for long.
“The boy got up and started walking toward his father,” said Paone. “He was crying but he walked over to his dad and hugged him.”
Ethier made the boy lay back down in a patch of grass until rescue workers could check him out for possible internal injuries.
Woonsocket rescue personnel later took the boy to Hasbro Children’s Hospital, Providence, where he was admitted briefly for observation.
“The last information our officers got when they left the hospital was that there were no injuries,” said Paone. “It’s amazing.”
Paone said the child lives with his family on nearby Front Street. Including Ethier, she said there were two adults in the Bernon Street apartment with the child when the boy fell.
Paone said the hospital is expected to notify the state Department for Children, Youth and Families of the mishap, which is routine in such cases.
She said she does not expect the agency to take any action.
“It just seems like it was an accident,” said Paone.
