City couple charged with assault, thefts

September 6, 2013

WOONSOCKET – Police say an East Woonsocket woman was attacked with a knife after she confronted neighbors she suspected had broken into her home.

Toni Janis, 28; and Chad Nunes, 33, both of 2229 Diamond Hill Road, Apt. E, are facing felony charges stemming from the assault, said Det. Jamie Paone.

They’re also charged with numerous counts of receiving stolen goods, breaking and entering, and larceny – 16 counts in all. The charges stem from the break into the victim’s home as well as thefts from the motor vehicles of three other neighbors.

Police said they discovered several thousand dollars’ worth of stolen TVs, GPS devices and other home electronics in the couple’s apartment, including some whose owners they could not identify.

The victim of the assault was identified as Jean Pina, 46. She told police she came home about noon on Sept. 1 and discovered an assortment of property missing, including a 50-inch television set, a video game system and some anti-depressant medication.

About four hours later, police were summoned to the home of Janis and Nunes for a report of an assault.

There, Pina told them she had confronted the couple after she noticed her medications on their kitchen table. Nunes, she said, pushed her and ran off, while Janis confronted her with a steak knife and cut her twice in the arm. Police said the wounds were visible but did not require medical treatment.

After searching the apartment, police found several pieces of luggage which contained assorted consumer electronic goods, as well as the driver’s license of one of the victims. Police said the cache included a Nintendo game system, three car radios, two GPS devices, several iPods and a Samsung TV.

Janis and Nunes were arrested after police received a tip on their whereabouts Thursday.
