Police officer bitten by pit bull

May 7, 2013

WOONSOCKET – A police officer was bitten by a pit bull early Tuesday while investigating a report of a domestic assault at 252 Burnside Ave., police said.
Patrolman Patrick Greeno, 24, was struggling with a woman in the kitchen when one of her daughters opened a bedroom door, allowing two pit bulls to get out.
As he and another patrolman were wrestling 44-year-old Katie Acevedo into a pair of handcuffs, Greeno reported, one of the dogs bit him on the right forearm, breaking the skin and opening a laceration about a half-inch long.
Officer Michael Theroux, who was assisting Greeno, said he was getting ready to subdue the dog with a Taser, but both dogs were removed from the room by another member of Acevedo’s household before he deployed the non-lethal weapon.
The officers said the incident happened when they responded to a report of a domestic assault at Acevedo’s house at 6:18 a.m. Police said she was unruly and combative from the time they arrived and there was a 44-year-old man in the house who appeared to have been scratched. The man did not want to file a complaint, but the police are compelled to make an arrest whenever there is evidence of probable cause in a domestic assault.
Acevedo, 44, was taken into custody on charges of domestic assault and resisting arrest.
Detective Jamie Paone said doctors at Landmark Medical Center treated Greeno’s bite wound with a tetanus shot and put him on medication to prevent an infection. The dog was up to date on its vaccinations so the animal was allowed to stay with its owner, she said.
