BLACKSTONE, MA- Joan E. (Carpenter) Carey, 78, of Blackstone, MA, died peacefully February 2, 2013 at Rhode Island Hospital, Providence, RI surrounded by her loving family. She was the wife of John F. Carey.
Born on July 29, 1934 in Fall River, MA, she was the daughter of the late Leland and Ruth (Johnson) Higgins and the late Ernest Carpenter.
Mrs. Carey was passionate about music, reading, crossword puzzles, the beach, camping, roses, birds, and politics.
Mrs. Carey was an organist and choir director for several local churches including Saint Mark's Lutheran Church, B'nai Israel Synagogue in Woonsocket, RI and St. Augustine's Catholic Church in Millville, MA.
Besides her husband, she is survived by three sons, John Carey and his wife, Laure, of Rocky Hill, CT, David Carey and his companion, Susan Kidwell, of Tucson, AZ, and Christopher Carey and his wife, Lisa, of Southbury, CT; four daughters, Julie Carey of Warwick, RI, Leslie Carey-Filipponi of Blackstone, MA, Emelie Carey and her companion, Keith Lopes, of Woonsocket, RI, and Amy Carey of Cranston, RI. She also leaves a brother, David Carpenter, of Charleston, SC; 12 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. She was the grandmother of the late Rachel Carey of Rocky Hill, CT.
