BURRILLVILLE — In 1913, Woodrow Wilson was inaugurated as the country's 28th president; the first prize was inserted into a Cracker Jack box; and Francis Ouimet shot a 304 at the 19th U.S. Golf Open at The Country Club in Massachusetts.
On Jan. 12 of that year, Cecelia Flynn was born in Woonsocket during, of all things, a blizzard.
But there was no wintry weather yesterday as Cecelia — known to family and friends as "Mee Mee" — celebrated her centennial birthday at a party she actually planned herself.
A resident of Ashton Court in Harrisville, Cecelia was joined by family, friends and wellwishers, including Rep. Kale P. Keable (D-Dist. 47, Burrillville, Glocester), who presented her with official citations marking the occasion.
Cecelia, the daughter of the late Charles and Clara Russell, has lived in Burrillville for the past 40 years. She was married to John Flynn until his death in 1984.
During WW II, she worked at the former ART Garment Factory in Woonsocket for many years. She has two children, five grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson.
Cecelia lives independently at Ashton Court where she is an active member of the facility’s club. She enjoys music, knitting and dancing. In fact, her birthday request was to be able to dance to Hawaiian music and "let her Irish out," she said
"She is truly a wonderful, loving and special lady," said grandson Steve St. Pierre.
