BLACKSTONE, MA- Frances G. (Kuczek) Matkowski, 95, of Blackstone, died Tues. Dec. 4, 2012 in the Blackstone Nursing Home, Blackstone where she had been a resident since 2005. She was the wife of the late Joseph Matkowski who died in 1973.
Mrs. Matkowski once worked in the former Ilona Worsted in Millville and the former Cullins Nursing Home as a cook and nursing aide. She later retired from Worcester State Hospital where she was a dietary supervisor for many years.
She was born in Millville in 1917, daughter of the late Michael and Mary (Zych) Kuczek and was one of five children. Two of her sisters served in the military for over twenty years and her brother had served in the U.S. Army where he was wounded, recovered, and returned to battle when he was killed in Italy in 1944.
Mrs. Matkowski was one of the first residents of the Joseph Early Village in Blackstone in 1980, where she served for many years as president and treasurer for the Village seniors. She planned many excursions and activities for all the residents and seniors.
Her love and concern for family and friends was evident. Her hobbies were cooking, travel, crossword puzzles, gardening and watching the Red Sox. She ran many Club 45 dinners for St. Paul's Church in Blackstone, where she was a member.
She is survived by her children Maryann F., wife of Donald Fiske of Milford; Joseph and his wife Jacqueline (Casavant) Matkowski of Bellingham and Antoinnette, wife of Gerald Verfaille of North Smithfield; a sister Emily Hardy of Maryland; 5 grandchildren, Michael DeLuca of VT, David and his wife Cheryl DeLuca of Uxbridge, Tracy and her husband Peter Bilodeau of FL, Scott Verfaille of N. Smithfield, RI, and Lynne and her husband Mark Gallozzo of Needham; 6 great-grandchildren, one great, great-grandson, and many nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday, Dec. 7, 2012 at 11 AM in St. Pauls Church, 48 St. Paul St., Blackstone, MA 01504. Interment will follow in St. Paul's Cemetery.
Visiting hours will be held Friday from 9-10:30 AM in the Buma-Sargeant Funeral Home, 42 Congress St., Milford, prior to the funeral Mass.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Jude Childrens Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
