Police seize 21 weapons in arrest

August 8, 2012

NORTH SMITHFIELD — A 44-year-old resident was arrested Wednesday afternoon on domestic-violence charges involving him holding a gun to the head of his elderly mother.
Brian R. Mellor, of 1350 Pound Hill Rd., was arrested after his 71-year-old mother, Carol, who lives with him, went to the police station to report that he had put a gun to her head and threatened to kill her at around 9 a.m. Wednesday.
During a search of the Pound Hill Road home, police confiscated 21 weapons including numerous firearms and a crossbow, Chief Steven E. Reynolds said at an evening press conference.
Prior to that, North Smithfield police had contacted State Police, who dispatched their tactical unit. Neighborhood streets were closed and residents were evacuated.
Mellor, at around 2:30, walked out onto the driveway and gave himself up after receiving phone calls from police, Reynolds said.
He will be arraigned in District Court, Providence, this morning.
