WOONSOCKET — Nobody would ever think about splitting up Peter, Paul and Mary or firing one of the Three Stooges.
But it looks like the end of an era for one of the most famous trios in the city and — you guessed it — money is what’s pulling them apart.
We’re talking sidewalk performers here — those blue, green and burgundy garbage carts homeowners have been dutifully putting out for Waste Management’s trucks every week for some five years now.
Thanks to the advent of single-stream recycling, the city is in possession of at least 10,400 of the 65-gallon carts that it no longer needs. Green carts used to be reserved for paper and cardboard, blue for glass and cans, but now all those materials can be combined in a single cart because of new automated sorting equipment at the Rhode Island Resource Recovery Center in Johnston.
