WOONSOCKET- Muriel T. Gelinas, 86, of Greene St., Woonsocket, died Sunday at Landmark Medical Center. She was wife of Hubert P. Gelinas. They were married on June 28, 1948.
Born in Woonsocket, she was a daughter of the late Gonzalve and Lydia (Fontaine) Ethier.
She was a resident of Woonsocket for most of her life. She also lived in Bellingham for over 25 years. During their retirement years Mr. and Mrs. Gelinas resided in Florida prior to returning to Woonsocket.
Mrs. Gelinas was employed at McCarthy's Department Store, Bell Telephone, and also worked in the jewelry industry in North Attleboro.
She volunteered her time at the Bellingham Public Library for many years.
Gifted with a beautiful voice, Muriel was well-known in the Woonsocket area as a professional singer with the Peloquin Chorale in the 1940s and 50s. Throughout her life she was sought after to sing at numerous events and ceremonies.
Along with her husband, Muriel was a skilled dancer and learned various forms of dance under the famous dance instructor Arthur Murray.
Muriel was a very accomplished artist and her creative talent was evident in her paintings. Many family and friends treasure the artwork gifted to them by Muriel. She also enjoyed quilting with her friends in Florida.
In addition to her husband of 63 years, she is survived by a daughter Alma A. Check, and her husband Thomas, of North Smithfield, and her sister Sr. Carmel Ethier, RJM of Plainville. She was the mother of the late Donald L. Gelinas. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Peter Robidoux, Neil R. Gelinas, Mary Lou Lindgren, Laura Gelinas, Christopher and Stephanie Morin, several great-grandchildren, and her dear friend whom she considered a son, Armand R. Frechette of Woonsocket.
Her funeral will be Thursday at 9:00 am from the Menard-Lacouture Funeral Home, 127 Carrington Ave., Woonsocket, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 am in Precious Blood Church, Carrington Ave., Woonsocket. Burial will be private. Visiting hours are Wednesday from 5-7 pm.
