School canceled in Woonsocket

February 3, 2011

WOONSOCKET — Concerns over the stability of roofs at local schools has put students out of school for another day. School Committee Chairman Marc Dubois said a decision to close city schools today was made last night after some roof support buckling was detected at the Citizen’s Elementary School by Henry Trudeau, maintenance supervisor.
A check of the impact of heavy snow and ice on the Citizens roof by city building officials and engineers indicated the need for more study of the roof structure today. Concerns were also raised about the walkway canopy at Leo A. Savoie, Dubois said. All school buildings will be checked for damage or weaknesses while school is closed, Dubois said.

Snow on School Roofs.

I bet there must be at least 15 or so inches on the roofs of our schools. What bugs me about this is why does our Mayor and the School Department have to wait so long to make a decision to finally have the snow cleared from all of the roofs? Don't these people watch the news and see the stories about roofs collapsing from the snow? What is it going to take, a tragedy where one of our schools has a collapsed roof where some of the children get seriously hurt or worse, before you take immediate action? The snow needs to be removed from the roofs of all of our schools NOW!!!
