CUMBERLAND – Gloucester/Burrillville All-Stars manager Dave Peloquin admitted after his club had suffered a disgruntling 17-2 loss in a R.I. Little League District IV Major Division (11-12) Tournament round-robin finale on Monday night that he had a surprise in store for Cumberland I.

In the winner-take-all championship final, he would pitch Rebecca Arndt, a tall, strong hurler with an innate ability for baffling hitters – not to mention strikeouts.

When the two met for the automatic berth to the state championship event, Cumberland I head coach Steve D’Abrosca delivered quite the remedy for the powerful Arndt. It came in the form of diminutive but more-than-effective Brooke Turnbull.

The righthander whirled a two-hit gem and allowed only two walks (with a hit batsman) while whiffing eight as the Cumberlanders not only secured an 11-0 “mercy-rule” triumph at Diamond Hill Park on Wednesday night, but also its fifth straight D-IV title.

They now will take on West Warwick/East Side, the District III champs, in the state tourney opener at 1 p.m., Saturday at Trombino Athletic Complex in Westerly.
