WOONSOCKET â A 21-year-old woman was beaten, choked, raped with a bottle and held captive in her bathroom during a two-hour ordeal in her apartment Tuesday, police said.
Leopoldo Belen, 33, was to be arraigned in District Court today on multiple charges, including forcible rape with an object, domestic kidnapping and domestic rape, police said.
Belen has an extensive police record that dates back years and was sentenced to serve two years of an eight-year sentence at the ACI in 2008 on Providence police charges of felony domestic assault, according to the judiciaryâs web site.
In the latest incident, he was arrested at an apartment complex in Pawtucket after fleeing the crime scene, a house on Third Avenue, police said.
âItâs so egregious,â said Detective Sgt. Matt Ryan, a veteran of the police force. âI canât remember anyone treating a human being this way before.â
Police said they found the victim wrapped in a blanket and wearing a neighborâs bath robe after escaping her own apartment to call 911.
Some two hours after the episode began, the woman said, Belen allowed her into the kitchen to heat up some macaroni and cheese in the microwave and take the food into a bedroom to eat. The bedroom had an exit to the hall, but Belen kept watching her to make sure she didnât leave.
At one point she noticed Belen wasnât paying attention, and she took advantage of the opportunity to escape. She told police she grabbed a blanket to cover herself and ran to a neighborâs house to call for help. Police got the call about 8 a.m.
When officers arrived, Belen was gone.
About four hours later, Belen was tracked down at a Pawtucket apartment complex by Detectives George McMann and Michael Flood, said Ryan.
He was booked on charges of domestic forcible rape with an object; domestic rape; domestic strangulation; domestic kidnapping; domestic assault; and battery domestic disorderly conduct and larceny. He was transported to Sixth District Court in Providence Wednesday morning for arraignment.
The victim was taken to Landmark Medical Center.
