Consuelo Perez

WOONSOCKET - Consuelo "Gil" Perez, 84, of Woonsocket, RI, passed on March 8, 2014 at Oakland Grove Nursing Center in Woonsocket, RI. Gil, the youngest of 6 children, was born on September 1, 1929 on a small farm in Cuba. He realized his childhood dream of coming to America in June of 1947 at age 16.
An alum of Thayer Academy in Braintree, MA ('50) and Northeastern University ('55), he would go on to proudly serve in the United States Air Force. Gil worked for both Norelco and John Hancock after which he devoted his time to the Woonsocket Family Resources Community Action Center, allowing him to follow his passion of serving others and bettering his community. A man of great faith, he served as a Deacon in the First Baptist Church of Woonsocket and the Georgiaville Baptist Church of North Smithfield. Gil was an active Republican who served the Woonsocket community at the Because He Lives Ministry and the Salvation Army. In 1999 the Chaplin-Perez Community Center was dedicated in his name honoring his countless hours of service. Gil loved his Red Sox, politics and American history, and took great pride in achieving his American citizenship. In 2010, Gil accomplished his lifelong dream of becoming an author, publishing "Alpha and Omega," an autobiography that chronicles his very own "American Dream".
Gil is survived by his wife, Nina, daughters, Donna Rowe and son-in-law, Dana, of Dartmouth, MA; Linda Aprea and son-in-law, Michael, of Centerville MA; grandchildren Tyler, Tony, Kathy, Michael & Stephanie & great grandsons Max and Rocco. Gil touched the lives of many. To us he was simply "Daddy" and "Papa."
Funeral arrangements will be held under the direction of Holt Funeral Home, 510 Main Street, Woonsocket, RI on Wednesday, March 12, 2014 with visitation at 1pm, followed by a Memorial Service at 2pm. Burial will follow in Union Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, a donation in Gil's honor may be made to the Woonsocket Family Resources Community Action Program, 176 Sayles Street, Woonsocket, RI or the Georgiaville Baptist Church, 100 Farnum Pike, Smithfield, RI 02917.
