Middlebrooks goes hitless again in third rehab game; PawSox fall to Red Wings, 8-1

April 24, 2014

PAWTUCKET — Other than Will Middlebrooks expressing confidence that he was able to put some nice swings on the ball and that his strained calf survived several demanding tests at third base, there’s not much to take away from Thursday’s matinee at McCoy Stadium.
Anthony Ranaudo struggled on the bump and Pawtucket’s bats went cold as Rochester ran away with an 8-1 victory. Middle-brooks concluded his three-game rehab stint with another hitless day, going 0-for-4. In 10 minor league at-bats, the third baseman failed to collect a single base knock.

Boles prepares to fit Nava into PawSox's fray

April 24, 2014

PAWTUCKET — At first blush, it would seem PawSox manager Kevin Boles has a dilemma on his hands.
His team already flush with options at first base and the corner outfield spots, Boles will have another warm body at his disposal when Daniel Nava finally reports to the Triple-A ranks on Friday. Since Nava isn’t on a rehab assignment, his stay with Pawtucket figures to cut into someone’s playing time.

Cumberland rallies past Lincoln for fifth straight win

April 24, 2014

LINCOLN — It’s very safe to say Cumberland High skipper Paul Murphy had hoped Thursday afternoon’s intense winds would affect rival Lincoln’s pitchers and fielders more than his own.
Through the first four frames of a Division I tilt at Chet Nichols Memorial Field, he didn’t get his wish.
The Lions rushed out to a quick 5-2 lead after the third, but Cumberland’s fortunes changed on a dime in the fifth. Behind only two hits but a pair of Lincoln errors, Murphy’s crew manufactured five runs and raced to what had seemed an improbable but satisfying 7-5 victory.

Middlebrooks: Nava 'is going to land on his feet and be fine'

April 23, 2014

PAWTUCKET — Will Middlebrooks can relate to Daniel Nava.

A year ago, Middlebrooks scuffled so badly that the Red Sox were left with little choice but to send the starting third baseman to Triple A. Looking back at his minor-league penance, Middlebrooks says that he was able to weather a turbulent stretch thanks to his ability to quickly put the grief behind him.

Northmen superb in 4-1 triumph over Tolman

April 21, 2014

NORTH SMITHFIELD – Almost everything he witnessed on Monday morning/afternoon, North Smithfield High skipper Jon Leddy liked – a lot.
His starter, junior righty Ian Pascoe, allowed a mere four hits in his five-inning stint as the Northmen remained perfect on the Division II-North campaign with a 4-1 drubbing of always-pesky Tolman.

The tilt took place before perhaps 70 fans basking in the springtime sunshine at the school’s diamond.

For two area runners, finishing the Boston Marathon after not doing so last year would qualify as success

April 20, 2014

The bib numbers in the 30,000s and high 20,000s look awfully strange.

And the newly created fourth wave won’t start until at least 85 minutes after the first wave has crossed the starting line in Hopkinton.

But to Lincoln’s Poyee Oster, Pawtucket’s Linda Bachand, and the nearly 5,700 runners that did not finish last year’s Boston Marathon because of the terrorist attack, that means very, very little.

Getting another chance to return for the 118th running of this legendary race, and this time, finishing what they started, is the only thing that matters.

Woonsocket Little League celebrates first Opening Day in style at Renaud Field

April 19, 2014

WOONSOCKET — Since last October, Mike St. Germain and dozens of other folks have spent countless hours planning and resourcing the new Woonsocket Little League.
After all that organizing, those people saw their labor come to fruition during the first-ever WLL Opening Day at Renaud Field.
Because the league – which consists (baseball-wise) of teams that once represented the Bernon and East Woonsocket organizations – now is so large, the board of directors had to schedule the ceremonies for the new home of Woonsocket High baseball.

Former Cumberland star Hilary Dionne hopes to make her presence felt once again at Boston Marathon

April 19, 2014

When Hilary Dionne graduated from Dartmouth College in 2007 after a spectacular running career for the Hanover, N.H. school, she put her focus and energy into the next step of her life — entering the work force and making a good living for herself as she entered her mid-20s.
Dionne continued to run, but aside from a few appearances at the CVS Downtown 5K and some other local road races, she mostly stayed away from racing for the next three years.

Victorino passes first rehab test with PawSox

April 19, 2014

PAWTUCKET — To PawSox manager Kevin Boles, Shane Victorino passed his first rehab test.

Playing six innings in the first game of Saturday’s doubleheader at McCoy Stadium, Victorino went hitless in three at-bats and did not record a play in right field. He was replaced in the top of the seventh inning by Alex Hassan.
“The game-plan was five to six innings and three at-bats,” noted Boles.

Workman relishing rotation role after making mark in Boston as reliever

April 18, 2014

PAWTUCKET – Rarely do you hear “versatility” and “pitcher” mentioned in the same breath.

According to PawSox manager Kevin Boles, the adjective perfectly sums up a promising Red Sox pitcher who last year earned high marks due to his ability to gracefully swing back and forth between the starting rotation and the bullpen.

For the time being, Brandon Workman is no longer viewed as an interchangeable swingman. He now takes the ball once every five days for Pawtucket and quiet frankly, the 25-year-old is thrilled to be included in the rotation mix.
