College Football | Regrouped Bryant squad ready to tackle Northest opener

October 10, 2015

SMITHFIELD – Just as fall foliage is beginning to take shape around here, the Bryant football team has arrived at the Northeast Conference portion of its schedule.

The reality is that while last week’s last-minute loss at Monmouth was both frustrating and illuminating, it doesn’t change or diminish the goal of the Bulldogs’ season. The mission is to win a Northeast championship, and that march begins in earnest Saturday in New Britain, Conn. against Central Connecticut.

Even North Smithfield coach surprised (pleasantly) by tennis team's success

October 9, 2015

NORTH SMITHFIELD — It was obvious North Smithfield High head coach Laurie Puddester would have preferred to be back out on the nearby courts, watching her Northmen face gritty Woonsocket in a Division III-B clash on Friday afternoon.
Mother Nature, however, had other ideas. With the match in its infancy, the rains came, and she was forced to retreat with her players, not to mention the Villa Novans, to the school cafeteria to wait out the storm.

Cumberland High Boys Soccer | HOLDING DOWN THE FORT: Principal, Vice Principal take over as co-coaches for Clippers

October 8, 2015

CUMBERLAND – People like Alan Tenreiro and Adolfo Costa are doers and men of swift action.

They also have soccer in their blood, which as it turns out proved to be quite handy.

Late last month, Cumberland High was thrown into a quandary upon the resignation of first-year boys’ soccer head coach Manny Veiga. With nine regular-season games still ahead for the Clippers, the program required a quick solution.

Commentary | McGair: PawSox manager Kevin Boles has strong case to be Boston's next 1B coach

October 6, 2015

A little of this, a little of that …

Of all the members of the Red Sox baseball staff in place when Dave Dombrowski became president of baseball operations, PawSox manager Kevin Boles was probably the only person who could safely say he had a foot in the door with the new guy in town.

Cross Country | Cumberland rules North Division once again; Individual honors go to Burrillville’s Durand, Cumberland’s Laverty

October 6, 2015

CUMBERLAND — Burrillville senior Zach Durand has a simple objective every time he toes the line for a cross-country meet.

“He’s in it to win it,” stated Broncos head coach Samantha Stanton. “He has the mental and physical capacity for this. Plus he’s a senior so he’s got nothing to lose at this point. He’s giving it everything he’s got.”

Mount St. Charles Boys' Soccer | MSC receives plenty of offense in rout of Narragansett

October 4, 2015

WOONSOCKET — Mount St. Charles got five goals from five different players in Sunday’s 5-0 win over Narragansett.

The Mounties, who improve to 5-1-2 in Division II, received tallies from Dylan Danneker, Tyson Szynal, Matt White, Pat Kumar and Jake Lawrence. Szynal and White added two assists each while Patrick Hardesty had one assist.

MSC led 2-0 at halftime. The team used two goalies: Alex Lataille had seven saves while Christian McDermott had three stops.

Boston Red Sox | BoSox parting ways with former PawSox manager Arnie Beyeler

October 4, 2015

Arnie Beyeler was well aware of the risks when the Red Sox signed Hanley Ramirez and proclaimed that he would be taking over the left-field duties.

A former PawSox manager who guided the ball club to the 2012 Governors’ Cup, Beyeler spent the last three seasons Boston’s first-base coach. He was also responsible for coaching outfield play, meaning he had a personal and professional stake in transforming Ramirez into an adequate defender.

Burrillville Football | ZACK ATTACK: Senior runs wild as Broncos roll past North Providence

October 3, 2015

NORTH PROVIDENCE – Like a lot of folks, Burrillville senior Zack Tayes enjoys playing fantasy football.

Told his final rushing stats against North Providence Saturday – 259 yards on just 15 carries and five touchdowns – would have resulted in a ridiculous individual point total and likely a lopsided victory over this week’s fantasy opponent, Tayes simply smiled while trying to wipe the mud off his face.

Cumberland Girls' Soccer | La Salle tops Clippers in Division I-North showdown

October 3, 2015

PROVIDENCE— The margin for error is so thin between the top three girls soccer teams in Division I-North that one misplaced pass or one missed defensive assignment could be the difference between a victory or a defeat.

That was the case Saturday afternoon when Cumberland finished up its most difficult week of the regular season with a road contest against the top team in the state, La Salle Academy.

Women's College Soccer | Cumberland's Ribeiro enjoying strong bounce-back season at UConn

October 2, 2015

Stephanie Ribeiro’s return to the UConn women’s soccer team couldn’t have been scripted any better.

Exactly one year ago, Ribeiro dealt with the likelihood that her junior season was over before it actually started. The Cumberland native pulled her hip flexor during the spring of her sophomore year. The frustrating part was that every time Ribeiro believed that she was in the clear, a setback would occur.
