N.S. survives 57-56 triumph over Islanders, remain unbeaten

January 18, 2013

NORTH SMITHFIELD -- With all due respect to other Division III squads with title-game aspirations, if another North Smithfield-Middletown matchup isn’t contested in the state final in March, it would be a tragedy.
This one, honestly, was that entertaining.
With 1.8 seconds left in regulation, and the Northmen trailing 50-49, it appeared senior guard Walker Strick had landed a baseline trey to lift the hosts to a thrilling, come-from-behind 52-51 victory over the Islanders.
The two officials, however, indicated the scoreboard was incorrect, and deemed an overtime session necessary.

Northmen stay perfect, survive scare from Huskies

January 16, 2013

NORTH SMITHFIELD --- If unbeaten North Smithfield was looking for the perfect test to help the Northmen prepare for Thursday night’s duel between the Division III’s other undefeated team, Middletown, the Northmen got one and then some on Tuesday night in the form of red-hot Mount Hope.
The Northmen, who entered the week capturing their seven league games by an average of 27 points, went the distance with the Huskies in a thrilling game that featured 14 lead changes, eight ties, and a boatload of three-pointers (19 of ’em, 11 by the Huskies).

Northmen prove too tall an order for Raiders

January 14, 2013

NORTH SMITHFIELD — Shea High veteran head coach John Lickert indicated before the contest he didn’t know how his squad would fare against Division III-North host North Smithfield on Monday night.
He had a variety of reasons, as his Raiders had to battle the Northmen without the services of sophomore swing Carol Rodriguez and junior forward Najah Goncalves. Rodriguez, his leading scorer and rebounder, had suffered a possible concussion in a loss to Davies Tech on Friday, and Goncalves – another stellar starter – had sustained a laceration to her head in the same tilt.

January 12, 2013

It’s been 10½ months since the high school hockey scene last heard from Britney Evangelista, but the last time she made news on the ice, it reverberated around and beyond the state.
It was last Feb. 25, a Saturday night at the Rhode Island Sports Center, in the second game of a best-of-three semifinal-round series against the Burrillville/Ponaganset co-op team, that Evangelista, then a sophomore goaltender for North Smithfield, turned in a performance that raised eyebrows and dropped jaws.
