Woonsocket boys drop 57-49 hoop verdict to SRA

February 7, 2013

PAWTUCKET — St. Raphael Academy head coach Tom Sorrentine closed his post-game interview this way: “We've had trouble with size inside all year long, and that's got to change.”
Minutes before, Sorrentine watched as Woonsocket High big men Gare Lyles and Piotr Linek tore down rebound after rebound in their Division I-North clash at Alumni Hall on Thursday night.
In the end, however, the Saints overcame that height, utilized an 11-5 surge in the span of 6:59 late in the final stanza and garnered a 57-49 victory before about 150 fans.

Cumberland's Baxter signs LOI with nearby Bryant

February 6, 2013

CUMBERLAND — Mitchell Baxter had a perfectly good reason to step inside Cumberland High’s main office at 8 a.m. on Wednesday.
With his heart and mind firmly made up about joining the Bryant University football family, Baxter faxed in his National Letter of Intent to the NCAA Division I FCS member. A senior who played a key role in the Clippers capturing the Division II Super Bowl this past fall, Baxter had also considered Assumption (Mass.) College, Southern Connecticut State, West Virginia’s Fairmont State University and Plymouth (N.H.) State.

Cumberland boys close out Shea for hoop win

February 5, 2013

CUMBERLAND — When the game got down to crunchtime, Tom Lazaras, Ben Bradley and the rest of the Cumberland High squad put on a clinic on how to close games out.
Protecting a 60-54 lead with 3:11 remaining, Cumberland put down the clamps defensively to secure a well-earned 71-57 triumph against Shea High on Tuesday night at Wellness Center. The Raiders had managed to within striking for much of this Division II contest featuring two division leaders. Then came the game’s most important stretch, which saw the Raiders miss 11 consecutive field-goal attempts and 13-of-14.

Northmen improve to 18-0, down Warwick Vets

February 5, 2013

NORTH SMITHFIELD — Head coach T.J. Ciolfi claimed to be less than ecstatic after his North Smithfield High squad, with a notable edge in height, allowed under-.500 Warwick Vets to manufacture a 9-0 run at the end of the initial half to slice a 13-point deficit to 39-33.
He had wanted more efficient board work from senior tri-captain/center Matt Walkow and junior forward Peter Keenan.
“Matt and Pete got an earful at intermission,” Ciolfi confessed. “I felt that with our size advantage, we should’ve started the game with more rebounds.”

Has a nice ring to it: How Pawtucket's Governors' Cup keepsake came to be

February 4, 2013

PAWTUCKET — The finished product had to be something that embodied the 2012 Governors’ Cup title the Pawtucket Red Sox won.
After discussing the anatomy of a championship ring – a glittery reminder of what was achieved – with PawSox general manager Lou Schwechheimer, it became clear why so much time and energy was put into coming up with the perfect keepsake. For the purpose of this exercise, we thought it would be appropriate to touch upon several key subject plots that were taken into consideration during the “has a nice ring to it” process.

LaFazia – call her the No. 2 – drained 13 of her 18 points in the opening half, and also contributed five steals, five assists and six rebounds for the Northmen, who improved to 9-5 overall and 8-3 in league play.

The Tigers also seemed destined to eke out a two- or three-point triumph over the Clippers, but head coach Gary Reedy’s crew had other plans.
