WOONSOCKET --- The defense that played in spurts and gave up 10 goals during a sloppy two-game stretch last weekend took a huge turn for the better on Friday night in Mount St. Charles’ showdown with Bishop Hendricken.
Derek Deschene’s goal off a pass from Shamus Maloney with 4:50 to go in the second period snapped a 1-1 tie, and goaltender Dan Foster turned in an outstanding 32-save performance to help the Mounties grab a 3-1 victory in this marquee matchup at Adelard Arena.

CUMBERLAND --– For the past four decades, the face of Cumberland High swimming has been Bruce Calvert. During his long tenure as the Clippers’ head coach, he produced an abundance of all-state athletes and a combined 13 state crowns (boy and girls).
Calvert no longer patrols the CHS pool, retiring from his longtime post in November only a few months after doing the same as the school’s aquatic director.
PAWTUCKET – Arnie Beyeler was sitting at the head of a table in a conference room at snow-covered McCoy Stadium on Friday afternoon, performing his first official act as manager of the Pawtucket Red Sox.

LOVELL, MAINE- Catherine (Benoit) Marks died Wednesday, January 12 at home in Lovell, Maine, surrounded by family with her husband by her side. She was the wife of James J. Marks, formerly of North Smithfield Rhode Island, and daughter of Ernest Benoit (deceased) and Claire M. Poulin, wife of Charles A. Poulin of Millville, MA.
Catherine Benoit and James Marks were married at St. Augustine's Church on August 27th, 1977 in Millville, MA.
Thomas Bardell
WOONSOCKET- Thomas Bardell, 90, of Woonsocket, died Jan. 11, 2011 at Oakland Grove Health Center. He was the husband of the late Lucy (Tellier) Bardell.
Born April 12, 1920 in Woonsocket, a son of the late Michael and Mary (Czemerda) Bardell.
He was a Navy Veteran of WW II and a Woonsocket Police Officer for 27 years.
He leaves a sister, Helen Eaton of No. Kingstown and also two godsons, Normand Bardell of Bellingham and Roger Gaulin of Woonsocket

CUMBERLAND -MARTELL, SISTER MARY ANDREA, 92, a Sister of Mercy and a retired educator, passed away Thursday, Jan. 13, 2011 at Mount St. Rita Health Centre, Cumberland.
Born Helena Martell in Woonsocket, a daughter of the late Thomas and Mary (Bliss) Martell. She entered the Sisters of Mercy on September 8, 1935 and professed her vows on August 16, 1941.
Marilyn D. Boyle
WOONSOCKET- Marilyn D. (Carey) Boyle, 78, of Woonsocket, passed away on Wednesday, Jan. 12, 2011 at Landmark Medical Center. She was the beloved wife of the late Evan H. Boyle, and her devoted companion Roland "Mitch" Michaud of Woonsocket.
Born in Woonsocket on December 21, 1932, she was the daughter of the late Earle and Lucy (Masson) Carey.
Jeannette Gouin
LAS VEGAS, NV - Jeannette Gouin, 96 of Las Vegas, NV passed away Dec. 14th 2010 after a short illness with her family by her side.
She was born in Uxbridge, Mass. but spent most of her life in Woonsocket. Jeannette relocated in Las Vegas 7 yrs ago with her daughter Claudette with whom she lived. She was the daughter of Albert and Aurore (Valois) Clement. She was the widow of Arbea Gouin.
She belonged to the Royal Travelers and St Joseph Travelers Club. She enjoyed bingo, cards, traveling, going to Foxwoods and Social Center.
