Round Top Bridge reopens

November 9, 2010

BURRILLVILLE - Rhode Island Department of Transportation (RIDOT) officials joined town officials Monday for a ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate the reopening and rapid construction of the Round Top Bridge in Harrisville.
The bridge, which carries Callahan School Street (Route 96) over the Clear River, was built ahead of schedule in just 41 days. The new span constructed entirely with pre-cast concrete components - the first time RIDOT has built a bridge this way, according to RIDOT Spokesman Charles St. Martin.

NORTH SMITHFIELD — The School Department is weighing its options for handling a local teacher and coach who has been charged by State Police with allegedly texting inappropriate messages to minors.

For Paterno, wins and age are just numbers

November 9, 2010

It was great to see Joe Paterno collect his 400th career victory at Penn State on Saturday. I was in the neighborhood for many of the first 120 back in my college days and early sports writing years. It wasn’t always easy dealing with a man who set such high standards for himself and his program. Paterno kept everyone on their toes, beginning with his players and going right down the list, all the way down to the lowest creatures on earth … the sports writing fraternity.

High school basketball tourney needs tweaking

November 9, 2010

Nobody said the format to crown a single champion for the 2010-11 high school boys’ basketball season would be perfect. The event, which calls for a 16-team bracket, is the first of its kind, meaning it should be viewed as a litmus test by administrators, coaches and players.
But that hasn’t stopped some coaches from the lower divisions in voicing concern on how everything is arranged. The field is broken down so that the first eight slots are awarded to Div. I teams, the next five belong to Div. II, and the last three spaces are set aside for entries from Div. III.

Rain delays high school playoffs

November 9, 2010

Monday’s nasty weather resulted in the postponement in tournament games in both boys and girls soccer.
The Division I boys soccer semifinals will now take place Wednesday at Cranston Stadium, with top seed Barrington facing No. 5 South Kingstown at 6 p.m. and North Kingstown, the sixth seed, meeting No. 2 Shea at 8. The winners square off in Friday’s championship game at Rhode Island College.

PawSox manager bolts to Toronto

November 9, 2010

PAWTUCKET -- In the end, Torey Lovullo could not say no to his mentor and close friend John Farrell.
A partnership that took flight as teammates with the California Angels in 1993 and later working side-by-side in the player development ranks with the Cleveland Indians was rekindled Monday, as Lovullo was hired to join Farrell’s coaching staff in Toronto. The former Pawtucket Red Sox manager will serve as the Blue Jays’ first base coach.
